This site needs certain components and routines to be used fully. Below are described the demands on computers, availability of components and network capacities for this site.
The different functions of this site can be handled by Windows 9x, NT, 2000 or XP and Power Macintosh computers. Most functions can also be used by computers using Intel-based Linux distributions of later versions and computers using Sun Solaris. There is some possibilities though that some combinations of Linux distributions or Sun Solaris systems, browsers and components might not work. Since QuickTime components are not released for Linux or Sun Solaris yet the digital lectures is not runnable on those platforms.
The computers should at least have the following configurations:
Windows - Pentium-based computer with at least 32 MBytes of RAM using Windows 9x or NT, 2000 or XP. Screen able to display thousands of colors in 1024*784 (when viewing digital lectures) and equipped with a functional sound-card and speakers/headphones.
Power Macintosh - at least 32 MBytes of RAM, screen capable of displaying at least 1024*784 pixels with thousands of colors. External speakers or headset. MacOS X - based computers needs at least 64 MBytes of RAM, preferably at least 128 MBytes.
Intel-based Linux - Pentium-based computer with at least 32 MBytes of RAM, using the newest Linux distributions preferably from Caldera or Red Hat. Display capable of displaying 1024*784 and set to display thousands of colors. External speakers or headset.
Sun Solaris - Display capable of presenting 1024*784 in thousands of colors.
The browsers that are directly supported by this site are Netscape Navigator/Communicator 4/Netscape 6 and higher and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 or higher. The recommended choice for Windows computers is Internet Explorer, users of MacOS is recommended to use Netscape 4.7x. Recommended browser for MacOS X are Safari or Internet Explorer. Recommended browser for Linux and Sun Solaris is Netscape.
Several functions of this site uses multimedia and document handling components together with the components for the database functionality:
Apple Computer QuickTime is used for all the handling of multimedia in this site - images, movies, sounds, presentations and streaming media. QuickTime is also the tool for the digital lectures in the OmnIES part of the site. Recommended version for this site is version 5 or higher.
Adobe Acrobat Reader is used for distribution of reports and is also used in the Omnies system for handling of course documentation.
This sites different components are mainly designed not to demand higher transfer rates than those handled by a V90-modem. There might be parts of the site that demands larger bandwidth but those parts are fully declared and described for the user. The digital lectures are in many instances runnable across 28.8 kbit modems.
